Trump’s Decision Will Isolate the US
President Trump last week officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced a plan to move the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump’s move caused reactions from all over the world. Critiques points that US foreign policy step will cause to inflame tensions in the region and disrupt the peace process. Hence, because of the US’ decision, the US has become alone and isolated.
For decades, every US President has been avoiding to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to not to damage Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, and mostly importantly, Jerusalem was seen as the capital of Palestine for many nations. It is the fact that the US’ unilateral and provocative decision would break with international consensus and peace stability in the region. However; as Trump took such a stumper step in foreign policy, He has made the US more isolated in the light of snowballing reactions.
Following the Trump’s announcement, Turkey gave a strong reaction. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that “Jerusalem is the red line for Muslims and, we are the followers of this decision as the Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and it can be resulted as far as breaking our diplomatic relations with Israel.”
Besides Turkey, several international organizations and countries, especially from the Islamic world, have opposed this decision and have warned Trump that such decision to be taken in this direction will put Palestine and the region into a great violent storm.
International organizations that oppose Trump’s “dangerous” plan on Jerusalem, the first of the Muslims to be regarded as holy by Christians and Jews as well, include the Organization for Islamic Cooperation the Arab League, United Nations and the European Union.
Both the UN and the EU state that such a decision in the zone will inflame the tensions and cut down the peace process and also most importantly the US’ decision will jeopardize both Palestinians and Israeli.
Some of the allies of the US during the UN Security Council meeting on Friday, criticized Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate its embassy to Jerusalem saying that it threatens the entire peace process. Sweden’s U.N. Ambassador Olof Skoog, the Security Council at United Nations headquarters looks at the decision as “contradicts international law”. Skoog said that “Jerusalem is a final status issue and can therefore only be resolved through negotiations agreed between the parties.”
British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft is another ambassador, criticizing the decision. Rycroft said, “We therefore disagree with the U.S. decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and unilaterally to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel before a final status agreement”. He also said that “These decisions are unhelpful to the prospects for peace in the region, an aim I know all of us in the council remain committed to.”
Besides the UN Security Council Meeting, several countries all over the world such as Bulgaria, Russia, New Zeland remarked their discomfort about the decision of the US. The common interest is based on that the issue must be concluded after the peace talks on the final status of the Palestinian territories following the implementation of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Any change in the status of Jerusalem without Israel-Palestinian negotiation can negatively affect the peace process in the Middle East.
It is the fact that with the snowballing reactions from all around the world, it is safe to say that the role of the US on peace talks is over. Also, the US administration is responsible for escalating the tension in Islamic and Arab world. This is contrary to United Nations resolutions, which sees Jerusalem as part of the occupied Palestinian territory, at the same time contradicting attempts to resolve the region’s crisis, threatening peace and security in the region. Most importantly, as the US took such inflaming, provocative, biased step, It has made itself alone and isolated in terms of defeating peace process.
